Koby and Sarah Charnotey

On Monday 16th January 2017, a minor was spotted at a grocery shop at Sakumono – Tema. This young boy who had gone to take more stock to hawk by the street, caught the attention of an ISBYC member.

He asked of his name, age and why he was not in school. The young boy mentioned his name as Koby, 7 years old and said his mum told him not to go to school because they had just reopened, but should go hawking to make ends meet. The grocery shop owner then confirmed how frequent Koby had been selling sachet water on the street. She added that Koby sometimes stayed on as late as 10:00pm.

When Koby was asked if he had eaten, he responded, “No” but was going to get food after he had finished his daily sales.

Further in the conversation, Koby mentioned his mum’s name and contact number. Kobby was sent home with some food items and money.

The information was communicated to ISBYC. Koby’s mum was contacted by ISBYC immediately. The first visit to Koby’s mother by ISBYC revealed that Koby’s younger sister Sarah was also at home due to financial constraints. A visit to Koby and Sarah’s school further revealed that they had school fees, feeding fee and books fee arrears. They also needed items such as school bags, and school uniforms. They were ,therefore, provided with new uniforms, school bags and all their school fees were fully paid. To the glory of God, Clement Koby Charnortey and Sarah Charnotey were sent back to school within the same week.

Kobby and Sarah are now beneficiaries of ISBYC scholarship. Their mother Madam Belinda was also put into a business she had always wanted to do.

There are many more school going kids like Koby and Sarah who are not in school due to financial constraints. Join ISBYC to champion this campaign to send every school going kid to school.
