Background

Korm is a farming community in Yilo Krobo Municipal, Eastern Region.

This community lacks basic amenities like potable water, clinic, telecommunication network etc.

It has a school, Korm M.A. Basic School with a population of about 400 pupils. This school serves six other neighboring communities.

This school is by the highway that links Somaya(Municipal capital) and Koforidua(Regional capital), one of the most dangerous roads in the eastern region with high records of road accidents and fatalities.

Every morning before class, school pupils cross this dangerous road and walk about 200meters to fetch water from a stream which is the only source of water to the community.

School pupils cross this dangerous road

Some school kids have in the past fallen victim to the gore on this road. There have been accidents, injuries, trauma and deaths. But these kids still cross this dangerous road everyday to fetch water from the stream, because there is no other source of water

The school also has reading books deficit per pupil. The table above shows the book deficit in red ink.

These hindrances hugely affect their study times and academic performance.

In solving this issue, ISBYC has adopted the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals four(4) and six(6) which respectively promote quality education and clean water and sanitation.

Our target

The initiative aims to do the following:

  • Spread the message of Christ
  • Distribute 100 Bibles
  • Inaugurate a mechanized community borehole
  • Launch a water treatment facility
  • Establish a community water reservoir
  • Provide mathematical, English, and science textbooks
  • Donate clothing, footwear, and bags to Korm residents
  • Offer refreshments to the community

The event

The ISBYC team, arriving at 9:20 am, was eager to contribute to the event’s success, supported enthusiastically by the Korm community. The event saw wholehearted participation from all segments of the community, including the Chief, Elders, the Headmaster, students, and residents. Highlighting the cultural heritage, female students performed the traditional dipo dance. Rev. Dr. Solomon Nortey commended the quality of the mineral water supplied by ISBYC, attributing it to Christian compassion and stressing the importance of embracing salvation through Jesus Christ for the betterment of the community.

The outcome

Following the successful implementation of ISBYC’s initiative in Korm, the community has witnessed a transformative change. The establishment of a mechanized borehole, alongside a water treatment plant and a community reservoir, has limited the perilous journeys to the stream, providing safe and accessible drinking water for the community. The donation of educational resources, including textbooks in mathematics, English, and science, has significantly enriched the learning environment, potentially improving academic performance and study efficiency for the 400 pupils of Korm M.A. Basic School and their peers from neighboring communities. Furthermore, the distribution of bibles, coupled with the promotion of Christian values, has fostered a sense of spiritual growth and communal unity. The comprehensive approach not only addresses immediate physical needs but also nurtures the intellectual and spiritual well-being of the Korm community, paving the way for a brighter, more sustainable future. The ISBYC team is grateful to all the supports from its sponsors and volunteers for the help achieving this target. To God be the glory for these profound impacts and the collective efforts that made them possible.
