building of the chps compound

  • Date of Edition – Ongoing Project since 2022

Background

The primary healthcare system is a focal concern, particularly in low and middle-income countries. Strengthening this system is vital to prevent up to 80% of illnesses through improved nutrition, clean water, hygiene education, family planning, vaccination services, and treatment of common ailments. In Ghana, the CHPS policy is a national strategy aiming to enhance access to primary healthcare and reduce the urban-rural divide. In 2021, significant discrepancies existed in healthcare access, with urban areas having considerably more hospitals and clinics than rural communities.

A thorough scouting mission was conducted by ISBYC’s dedicated team in the Gomoa West and Assin South districts. In Gomoa West, while some CHPS compound facilities were available, a preference for clinics and hospitals was noted, with many residents traveling significant distances for healthcare. Conversely, in the Assin South District, several towns lacked any health facilities, with residents in Assin Aseretoase and surrounding areas particularly disadvantaged. A halted CHPS compound project due to financial constraints was discovered in Assin Aseretoase, which has a dire need for such a facility.

The scouting team recommended that a CHPS compound health facility be built in Assin Aseretoase, which would serve multiple communities and a local junior secondary school. This facility is seen as critical to improving healthcare access for a population of over 1,700 people, especially for school children and emergency cases that are currently severely hampered by the lack of nearby medical services.

Our target

The initiative aims to do the following:

  • Constructing a CHPS compound health facility in Assin Aseretoase to serve as a primary healthcare center for the local and surrounding communities as well as the school pupils.

  • Building a community water reservoir within Assin Aseretoase to improve access to clean water for the community members

Work has already began on this project and the team estimates completion by Q2 2025 with support from our sponsors.
